چکیده

Context. X-ray surveys of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) indicate “cosmic downsizing”, with the comoving number density of highluminosity objects peaking at higher redshifts (z ∼ 2) than low-luminosity AGN (z < 1). Aims. We test whether downsizing is caused by activity shifting towards low-mass black holes accreting at near-Eddington rates, or by a change in the average rate of accretion onto supermassive black holes. We estimate the black hole masses and Eddington ratios of an X-ray selected sample of AGN in the Chandra Deep Field South at z < 1, probing the epoch where AGN cosmic downsizing

Optical–to–X-ray emission in low-absorption AGN: Results from the Swift-BAT 9 month catalogue

We present simultaneous optical–to–X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from Swift’s X-ray and UV–optical telescopes (XRT and UVOT) for a well-selected sample of 26 lowredshift (z < 0.1) active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) 9-month catalogue, the largest well-studied, hard X-ray selected survey of local AGN to date. Our subsample consists of AGN with low...

AGN host galaxy mass function in COSMOS - Is AGN feedback responsible for the mass-quenching of galaxies?

We investigate the role of supermassive black holes in the global context of galaxy evolution by measuring the host galaxy stellar mass function (HGMF) and the specific accretion rate, that is, λSAR, the distribution function (SARDF), up to z ∼ 2.5 with ∼1000 X-ray selected AGN from XMM-COSMOS. Using a maximum likelihood approach, we jointly fit the stellar mass function and specific accretion ...

The Cosmological History of Accretion onto Dark Halos and Supermassive Black Holes

Aims. We investigate the cosmological growth of dark halos and follow the consequences of coeval growth for the accretion history of associated supermassive black holes. Methods. The Press-Schechter approximation is used to obtain an analytic expression for the mean rate of growth of dark matter halos. Dark halo accretion rates are compared with numerical work and the consequences for understan...

Typical AGN at intermediate redshifts

We study the host galaxies and black holes of typical X-ray selected AGN at intermediate redshifts (z ∼ 0.5− 1.4). The AGN are selected such that their spectral energy distributions are dominated by stellar emission, i.e., they show a prominent 1.6 μm bump thus minimizing the AGN emission contamination. This AGN population comprises approximately 50% of the X-ray selected AGN at these redshifts...

On the jet contribution to the AGN cosmic energy budget

Black holes release energy via the production of photons in their accretion discs but also via the acceleration of jets. We investigate the relative importance of these two paths over cosmic time by determining the mechanical luminosity function (LF) of radio sources and by comparing it to a previous determination of the bolometric LF of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from X-ray, optical and infr...
